Washington DC USA-1952: White House With Green Front Lawn And Man Mowing

Archive Intelligence

Archive brief fit

Serves documentary and historical producers seeking 1950s Washington DC landmark footage, particularly for sequences on mid-century American civic life or White House grounds.

Period detail

The 8mm color stock, visible push lawnmower design, and figures' light summer clothing are consistent with early 1950s; the north facade appears in its post-war configuration.

Home-movie behavior

Shot from a tourist vantage on the north lawn perimeter, the camera holds on routine groundskeeping activity — a candid, unhurried visitor perspective rarely captured in contemporaneous newsreel coverage.

What appears in frame

White House north portico with tall white columns, a central fountain, manicured green lawn, trimmed box hedges, a push lawnmower, a groundskeeper in light clothing, additional figures near the entrance, and dark framing foliage.

Film character

The 8mm emulsion shows moderate grain with a slight blue-lavender color cast and soft vignetting at frame edges, giving the footage the warm, faded texture characteristic of mid-century home movie stock.

Edit role

Works as an establishing exterior insert or contemplative cutaway in a 1950s Washington DC sequence, or as a memory beat in a documentary covering early Eisenhower-era America.

Historical context

The north lawn footage offers a rare early-color record of the White House exterior in the early 1950s, showing routine public-grounds maintenance during a period of high postwar public interest in the building.

Research note

The White House exterior is public property; groundskeeping figures are visible but unidentified — the licensing team should assess whether any individual is identifiable enough to warrant further review.

Research search match

Likely found via searches for '1950s White House exterior,' 'early color Washington DC,' 'vintage lawn mowing,' 'mid-century government landmark,' or 'postwar America landmark footage.'

Archive pairing path

Pair first with other clips from the same apparent reel, then with 1950s Washington DC tourist or civic footage, then with mid-century American government landmark or groundskeeping scenes.
