Illinois USA-1962: Sailboats on Summer Lake

Archive Intelligence

Archive brief fit

Fits documentary and editorial briefs calling for early 1960s Midwestern leisure culture, summer lake recreation, or period Americana B-roll.

Period detail

Small motorboats, a distant sailboat, and figure silhouettes at the dock are consistent with early 1960s recreational boating; no modern watercraft or signage appears.

Home-movie behavior

A family member appears to have panned from open water toward the boat dock, capturing the unhurried rhythm of a summer day without staging the scene.

What appears in frame

Calm lake surface, small motorboats moored at a dock, a sailboat in the middle distance, dense deciduous treeline, houses through foliage, red buoy marker, small figures near the water, and blue sky with cumulus clouds.

Film character

The 8mm stock shows mild color fading toward blue-green tones, soft consumer-lens focus, natural grain, and slight vignetting at frame edges — hallmarks of a mid-century home movie scan.

Edit role

Works as a leisurely establishing shot or nostalgic insert cut in sequences about postwar suburban leisure, Midwestern summer life, or American lakeside recreation.

Historical context

The density of small motorboats at a community dock reflects the postwar expansion of recreational boating in Midwest lake communities during the early 1960s.

Research note

People appear as small figures near the dock; faces are not clearly discernible at this distance, but editorial and commercial use should still be assessed for likeness considerations under applicable law.

Research search match

Likely matched by searches for '1960s summer lake Illinois,' 'early 60s motorboat recreation,' 'vintage home movie sailing,' or 'Midwest leisure 8mm film.'

Archive pairing path

Pair first with other Illinois or Midwest lake footage from the same reel or year; then 1960s recreational boating clips; then broader postwar American summer leisure material.
