Family is the largest collection in the archive by a wide margin, around 160,000 clips, because it's what home movies were for. If a reel exists, odds are a family is somewhere in it.
Holidays and ordinary Tuesdays, reunions and road trips, three generations on a porch, the camera passed around until everyone's been caught. It spans the whole country, California and New York first, almost all on standard 8mm and Super 8.

Family footage is the archive's backbone, used in nearly everything: nostalgia and brand campaigns, documentaries of every kind, period scenes that need real people who look like they belong together. It's also the right place to start when you don't yet know the exact shot you need.
The 1950s families are posed and dressed for the camera. The 1960s, the peak, relax into color and candor. The 1970s get casual and warm, the camera lighter in the hand.
