Los Angeles California USA-1962: Matadors Perform In Bullfight Arena With Bull

Archive Intelligence

Archive brief fit

A 1962 8mm spectator record of a Los Angeles bullfight suits documentary and editorial productions covering mid-century Californian cultural spectacle or Latino cultural events in the United States.

Period detail

Matadors in trajes de luces with pink and magenta capes, a sandy circular arena, and signage reading "Toriles" and "Straight Bourbon Whiskey" visually support an early-1960s Californian bullfighting venue.

Home-movie behavior

Filmed from the spectator stands through foreground arena poles, the footage reflects an attendee's amateur vantage point rather than any staged or professional camera position.

What appears in frame

Sandy arena floor, curved red barrera wall, matadors in white and pink costumes, blue painted metal poles in foreground, spectators in tiered stands, period advertising banners, Toriles gate lettering, and a bull moving across the floor in the final frame.

Film character

Warm color shift, visible grain, and motion blur across active frames are characteristic of 1962 8mm stock, lending the footage an authentic handheld quality typical of tourist or personal-event documentation.

Edit role

Functions as a wide establishing cutaway or period insert for documentaries on mid-century Latino cultural events, bullfighting in North America, or Southern California spectator culture.

Historical context

Bullfighting was staged periodically in Southern California during the 1950s–60s as a cross-cultural public event; the bourbon whiskey and "Downtown" advertising banners may assist researchers in identifying the specific venue.

Research note

Matador and crowd faces are visible throughout; the partially legible "Straight Bourbon Whiskey" brand signage is a logo flag requiring clearance review for any commercial application.
