Los Angeles California USA-1962: Bullfighter Provoking Bull With Red Cape

Archive Intelligence

Archive brief fit

Suits documentary editors researching 1960s bullfighting, mid-century spectator sports, or Latin American/Spanish travel traditions; rare color 8mm arena footage from the early 1960s.

Period detail

Pink embroidered traje de luces, red wooden barrera, and Ektachrome-era color saturation are consistent with early-1960s bullfighting; the ring style may suggest a Mexican or Spanish venue rather than a U.S. location.

Home-movie behavior

Shot from elevated spectator stands on a fixed frame, this is an amateur tourist's view of the spectacle rather than a professionally staged arena perspective.

What appears in frame

Matador in pink embroidered suit, dark gray bull with horns, magenta cape, red muleta at ground level, sandy ring floor, red wooden barrera, distant spectators in tiered stands, bright midday arena light.

Film character

8mm color stock renders warm saturation drift and moderate grain across the bright sandy arena, with slight exposure blooming in highlight areas — characteristic of 1960s amateur color film.

Edit role

Functions as a cultural insert or atmosphere cutaway in documentaries on bullfighting, mid-century tourism, or 1960s spectacle; the close bull pass in the opening frames can anchor a tension beat.

Historical context

Bullfighting was banned in California well before 1962; the visible arena may show a Mexican plaza de toros — likely accessible to Los Angeles-based travelers — or a venue in Spain.

Research note

Matador's face is partially visible across frames in a public arena setting; verify actual filming location before any editorial use citing a U.S. venue; no audible music or visible trademarks noted.

Research search match

Researchers may search: 1960s bullfighting home movie, vintage matador color film, mid-century arena footage, 1962 bullfight 8mm, tourist bullfight Mexico Spain.

Archive pairing path

Pair first with other frames from the same reel; then with 1960s Mexico or Spain travel footage; then with mid-century spectator sports or cultural tradition collections.
