Calcutta India-1962: Two Black Bears Wrestling on Hillside

Archive Intelligence

Archive brief fit

Fills archival requests for 1960s South Asia wildlife; suited to nature documentary inserts, educational programs on Asian fauna, or heritage productions covering India in the early post-independence decades.

Period detail

The 8mm grain, warm color shift, and natural-light exposure are consistent with early 1960s amateur film stock; no infrastructure or signage is visible to confirm the urban-adjacent setting noted in the clip metadata.

Home-movie behavior

An amateur filmmaker shot close-range bear behavior from an observer position, preserving an unscripted wildlife moment that reads as a personal travel or zoo-visit record.

What appears in frame

Two dark-furred bears, dry sandy hillside, rocky soil wall, scattered dry twigs and debris on the ground, natural overhead lighting, handheld framing, 8mm film grain.

Film character

Visible 8mm grain and warm color cast lend the footage period-authentic texture; slight exposure variance across frames is characteristic of handheld amateur shooting in natural outdoor light.

Edit role

Works as a cutaway insert in wildlife or nature-documentary sequences, or as an observational beat in heritage films covering South Asia in the early 1960s.

Historical context

Asiatic black bears were kept in zoological collections in India by this period; the rocky enclosed terrain may reflect zoo or wildlife-park conditions, though no signage in the frames confirms the setting.

Research note

No identifiable human subjects appear; the filming location cannot be confirmed as public or private from the footage alone, so property rights require additional provenance verification.
