Calcutta India-1962: Black Bear Cubs Playing and Tussling Together Outdoors

Archive Intelligence

Archive brief fit

A 1962 8mm clip of two bear cubs in a rocky enclosure suits wildlife documentary cutaways, archival nature segments, or vintage South Asia travel sequences.

Period detail

8mm film vignetting and warm, muted color palette are consistent with early 1960s amateur filming; the pit-style earthen enclosure reflects mid-century zoo design.

Home-movie behavior

A visitor's close-range, handheld observation of captive bears — the kind of opportunistic zoo footage that rarely survives on professional film stock.

What appears in frame

Two dark-furred bears wrestling on sandy dirt ground, a rocky earthen embankment rising behind them, scattered small stones, sparse vegetation at frame top, and 8mm film-edge vignetting.

Film character

Heavy 8mm vignetting frames the action in a soft oval; warm, slightly muted tones and visible grain give the footage the faded look characteristic of mid-century home film stock.

Edit role

Works as a wildlife cutaway or playful animal insert in nature documentary sequences; the five-second duration suits a brief B-roll beat rather than a sustained scene.

Historical context

The pit-style earthen enclosure suggests a zoo or wildlife park setting; mid-century animal keeping conditions differed markedly from modern welfare standards, adding incidental social-history value.

Research note

No identifiable people, logos, or private interiors visible; the enclosure may constitute institutional property — verify filming location status before broadcast or commercial use.

Research search match

Researchers may search for 1960s India wildlife footage, vintage zoo bear behavior, archival South Asia animal film, or 8mm nature footage from the early 1960s.

Archive pairing path

Pair first with other clips from the same Calcutta 1962 reel; then with archival India zoo or wildlife footage; then with 1960s animal behavior or nature sequences.
