Calcutta India-1962: Women Washing Laundry at Calcutta Riverbank

Archive Intelligence

Archive brief fit

Suits documentary, educational, or travel productions needing early-1960s South Asian daily-life footage set at a Calcutta riverfront ghat.

Period detail

Stone ghat steps, a wooden rowboat, traditional wrapped garments, and absence of modern infrastructure support the early-1960s date; color fading is consistent with aged 8mm stock.

Home-movie behavior

Shot from a distance as a visitor or traveler observing the communal washing scene, with no sign of staging or subject awareness of the camera.

What appears in frame

Stone ghat steps, wooden rowboat, groups of figures in white and colored garments, white laundry spread on the bank, calm river water with reflections, and weathered stone architecture.

Film character

Warm color drift, visible 8mm grain, minor dust specks, and slight overexposure on pale stone surfaces give the footage an authentic period texture.

Edit role

Works as a cultural establishing shot or cutaway in South Asian documentary sequences; the wide ghat view suits transitions between interview or narration segments.

Historical context

River ghats served as central sites for domestic daily life in Calcutta during this era; communal laundry washing at the waterfront was common practice along the Hooghly.

Research note

Multiple people are visible throughout; individuals are small and faces are not clearly discernible, but standard editorial likeness review is advised; copyright clearance rests with the footage rights holder.
