Catskill New York-1957: Woman Wearing Yellow Scarf Sits On Aunt Jemima Pancake Float

Archive Intelligence

Archive brief fit

Fits documentary or editorial requests for 1950s American consumer culture, corporate promotional touring, and small-town parade coverage.

Period detail

Yellow-and-maroon float livery, red-and-white checkered shirt, and legible 'Here Today! Aunt Jemima Serving Her Famous Pancakes' lettering are consistent with mid-1950s commercial promotional design.

Home-movie behavior

A bystander shoots close as the float passes, then pulls back to capture the wider parade ground, horse-drawn carriage, and milling crowd — an unscripted spectator record.

What appears in frame

Yellow-and-maroon house-shaped parade float, 'Here Today! Aunt Jemima' banner, painted mascot panel on float side, woman in red-and-white checkered shirt atop float, crowd of spectators, horse-drawn vehicle, barn with weathervane.

Film character

Warm colour saturation of mid-century 8mm reversal stock, visible grain, and slight exposure shift as the camera pans from the bright float body to the broader overcast parade scene.

Edit role

Functions as a close insert on the branded float or as a pull-back establishing cutaway opening a sequence on 1950s corporate promotional touring or small-town fair culture.

Historical context

Quaker Oats ran Aunt Jemima promotional touring appearances through the mid-20th century; this footage may document one such live event at a regional fair or parade in upstate New York, giving it brand-history research value.

Research note

The Aunt Jemima trademark and painted mascot likeness appear prominently on the float; the woman atop the float is identifiable — talent clearance and brand licensing implications should be reviewed before commercial use.
