Catskill New York-1957: Boat In Water A Men Washing Car

Archive Intelligence

Archive brief fit

Suitable for 1950s Americana documentaries, mid-century suburban life features, or regional Hudson Valley history productions needing authentic 8mm home-movie texture.

Period detail

The light-blue two-tone American sedan with chrome front detailing visible in frame 3 is consistent with late-1950s domestic automobile styling; waterfront structures appear modest and residential.

Home-movie behavior

The car-wash sequence captures an unscripted domestic routine, a man hosing down his own vehicle in a residential driveway, with the candid, unhurried quality typical of amateur home-movie filming.

What appears in frame

Dark choppy water and distant shoreline with low structures; bright red-orange foliage framing a utility pole; a defocused close-up of reddish leaves; a man in short sleeves hosing a turquoise 1950s sedan in a tree-lined driveway.

Film character

The footage shows warm color saturation and occasional soft focus of color-reversal 8mm, with visible grain and slight vignetting at frame edges that add period texture to each shot.

Edit role

The waterfront shot works as an establishing or transition cut; the two foliage frames provide a warm color bridge or mood beat; the car-wash sequence functions as a self-contained suburban lifestyle insert.

Historical context

The mid-century American sedan and residential suburban setting reflect postwar prosperity and the rise of car culture in small Hudson Valley towns during the late 1950s.

Research note

At least one identifiable adult male appears in frame 3; no model release is documented, so editorial use requires legal review before commercial licensing; no visible branded logos or signage identified.
