About 35,000 driving and road clips, and the 1960s hold the largest share by far. The car was both the subject and the camera platform, so this is one of the deepest collections in the archive.
It splits between the car as star (new models in the driveway, family road trips, drive-ins) and the view through the windshield (main streets, mountain roads, the country going past). California and Colorado lead, almost all on standard 8mm and Super 8.

Driving footage suits automotive and travel campaigns, road-movie and Americana documentaries, and period scenes that need a real street full of period cars. The windshield point of view and the car-in-the-driveway shots are the workhorses.
The 1950s are about the car itself, chrome and fins shot like a portrait. The 1960s, the peak, move to the road and the trip. The 1970s widen the windshield view, with interstates and bigger engines.
