Catskill New York-1957: One Family Eating and Sharing a Picnic at a Park

Archive Intelligence

Archive brief fit

Suits documentary, educational, or commercial requests for 1950s American family leisure scenes; useful as a mid-century nostalgia sequence or social-history illustration.

Period detail

Adult clothing — patterned sport shirt, light cap, sunglasses, sleeveless blue dress, and cat-eye glasses in the final frame — is consistent with late-1950s American casual summer wear; parked vehicles in the background may be late-1950s models.

Home-movie behavior

The camera lingers close on family members reaching across the table to pass food, capturing the informal, unscripted warmth of a shared meal rather than posed performance.

What appears in frame

Adults seated at a concrete picnic table, a wicker basket at center, a blue sleeveless dress, a patterned sport shirt and light cap, sunglasses, food items on the table surface, additional picnic tables and park visitors behind them, and parked vehicles in the far background.

Film character

Color 8mm stock renders warm, saturated hues with visible grain and a slight softness across all four frames, consistent with a scan of original consumer color film from the late 1950s.

Edit role

Works as a social-documentary insert or memory beat illustrating postwar American leisure; the final wider frame offers a natural cutaway or transition to the broader park setting.

Historical context

Densely populated public picnic areas were a fixture of mid-century American outdoor leisure culture; the number of occupied tables in the background suggests a busy summer recreation day.

Research note

Multiple adults with partially identifiable faces appear in the foreground across all frames; an outdoor public-park setting reduces private-property concerns but does not resolve likeness rights — clearance assessment is recommended before commercial use.
