Conteare Shellhouse Building Exterior — Clip Details

Shot on 8mm film in 1953, this clip captures the exterior of a building with a white sign reading 'CONTEAR SHELLHOUSE' mounted on beige vertical siding above a brick foundation. The camera pans right, revealing a large glass-paned door or window with a metal frame, through which a staircase is visible inside. The footage exhibits natural film grain, slight color fading, and a vintage aesthetic characteristic of mid-century home movies. The scene suggests a public or institutional building, possibly a community center or recreational facility, with no people present.

Archive Intelligence

Archive brief fit: Useful for 1950s San Francisco exterior cutaways of a modest public or institutional building captured in home-movie footage.
Period detail: The beige siding, brick base, metal-framed glass entry, and simple mounted lettering may show mid-century institutional design details.
Home-movie behavior: The clip has a visitor-shot feel, with the camera panning across signage and the entrance rather than staging activity.
What appears in frame: Visible details include a wall sign, beige vertical siding, brick foundation, large glass panes, metal door framing, and an interior stairway.
Film character: The 8mm footage shows soft focus, visible grain, slight color fading, handheld movement, and contact-print edge darkness.
Edit role: An editor could use it as an establishing insert, location transition, or quiet architectural cutaway in a mid-century sequence.
Historical context: The scene documents an exterior facade and entrance area without visible people, offering context for everyday built environments in the Bay Area.
Research note: The visible sign or name should be reviewed for trademark or identification issues; no people appear, but copyright and property permissions remain separate questions.
Research search match: Relevant searches include 1950s San Francisco building exterior, 8mm institutional facade, vintage glass entrance, and home movie architectural cutaway.
Archive pairing path: Pair first with adjacent shots from the same reel, then other San Francisco 1952 exteriors, then mid-century building and signage footage.
