View Of Distant Mountain Then Close-Up Of Cooled Lava Flow — Clip Details

Shot on 8mm film in 1972, this vintage home movie captures a dramatic volcanic landscape in Idaho. The clip opens with a wide view of a distant mountain under a cloudy sky, then transitions to a close-up of rugged, cooled lava rock formations. The distinctive purple and magenta color grading gives the footage a surreal, nostalgic quality. The texture of the solidified lava flow is prominently featured, with its cracked, undulating surface filling the frame. A few visitors can be seen exploring the site, emphasizing the scale of the volcanic terrain. This archival footage offers a rare glimpse of natural geological formations preserved in classic Super 8 film.

Archive Intelligence

Archive brief fit: Useful for 1970s home-movie requests needing Idaho volcanic landscape inserts, lava textures, or visitor-scale views for documentary and educational edits.
Period detail: The 8mm color, handheld framing, and 1972 metadata place the footage in an early-1970s amateur travel-film context, though the frames show no dated signs or vehicles.
Home-movie behavior: The clip has a visitor-shot perspective, moving between a scenic mountain view and close study of cooled lava surfaces rather than a staged presentation.
What appears in frame: Visible elements include dark lava formations, ropy cooled lava texture, a distant rounded mountain, cloudy sky, sparse grass, small signs, and a few visitors.
Film character: The footage shows pronounced 8mm grain, soft focus, magenta-purple color shift, variable exposure, and handheld composition typical of aged amateur film.
Edit role: An editor could use it as a geological cutaway, travel-memory beat, landscape transition, or texture insert between broader Idaho or volcanic-terrain scenes.
Historical context: The frames document public-looking visitor movement through a volcanic landscape and emphasize how recreational sightseeing encountered geological features in the period.
Research note: People appear small and largely indistinct, but likeness review may still be needed; copyright, location access, and any site permissions should be assessed separately.
Research search match: Likely matches searches for 1972 Idaho 8mm lava field footage, cooled lava close-up, volcanic landscape home movie, mountain and lava rock travel film.
Archive pairing path: Pair first with adjacent shots from the same reel, then other Idaho 1972 travel footage, then broader volcanic landscapes, lava textures, or national-site visitor scenes.
