A View Of Dry Rocky Mountains Surrounded By Huge Tree Trunks — Clip Details

Shot on 8mm film in 1972, this vintage home movie captures a haunting landscape in Idaho. A gnarled, dead tree trunk dominates the foreground, its twisted form contrasting with the dark, rugged volcanic rock stretching into the distance. Rolling hills under a bright blue sky with scattered clouds complete the scene. The footage exhibits classic Super 8 color grading with a distinct purple and blue tint, film grain, and soft focus, evoking a strong sense of isolation and natural decay. This archival clip is ideal for documentaries, editorial content, or nostalgic projects exploring American landscapes.

Archive Intelligence

Archive brief fit: 1970s Idaho 8mm landscape footage for productions needing an austere volcanic-rock cutaway, wilderness insert, or visual note of natural decay.
Period detail: The 1972 home-movie source and saturated 8mm color suggest a period amateur travel view, while the frames show no buildings, vehicles, clothing, or signage to date the scene visually.
Home-movie behavior: The camera studies the terrain from a visitor's eye level, moving from a distant dead trunk against hills to closer views of hardened rock texture.
What appears in frame: Visible elements include a gnarled dead tree trunk, dark rocky ground, ridged lava-like formations, low hills, sparse vegetation, blue sky, and scattered clouds.
Film character: The clip carries soft 8mm focus, visible grain, high-contrast exposure, and a purple-blue color shift that register as physical home-movie texture.
Edit role: An editor could use it as a quiet cutaway, establishing insert, transition, or memory beat between scenes about remote American landscapes or harsh terrain.
Historical context: The footage documents a dry Idaho landscape as seen by an amateur camera, emphasizing geological texture and isolation rather than human activity.
Research note: No people, logos, or private property are visible in the supplied frames, but copyright, location identification, and any property concerns should be reviewed separately.
Research search match: Useful search matches include 1972 Idaho 8mm landscape, vintage home movie rocky mountains, dead tree trunk desert terrain, and volcanic rock close-up.
Archive pairing path: Pair first with adjacent shots from the same reel, then other Idaho 1972 landscapes, then broader 1970s home-movie footage of dry rocky terrain and natural decay.
