Kansas USA-1958: Two Men Walking and Smoking by Lake

Archive Intelligence

Archive brief fit

Answers archival requests for mid-century American male leisure and casual camaraderie at a Midwest lakeside, circa late 1950s — suited to nostalgia, social-history, or documentary Americana segments.

Period detail

Both men in the opening close-up wear mid-century casual jackets and caps; one wears glasses with period-style frames and a red cap consistent with late-1950s American men's recreational dress.

Home-movie behavior

One subject grins directly at the camera in the close-up while the wider lakeside shots show men casually gathered at a viewpoint — unstaged moments typical of a leisure outing filmed for personal memory.

What appears in frame

Two men in close-up near a building: one smoking a cigarette, one in a red cap and glasses; three or more men in hats and jackets viewed from behind at a lake overlook; green shrubs and bare branches framing a broad calm lake under blue sky.

Film character

Warm-shifted tones in the close-up contrast with cooler exterior blue-sky sequences; moderate 8mm grain and slightly overexposed sky areas are characteristic of mid-century color reversal home-movie stock.

Edit role

The opening close-up works as a character-establishing insert; the wider lakeside shots function as contemplative cutaways or reflective memory beats in a mid-century Americana or nostalgia sequence.

Historical context

Cigarette smoking as everyday male socialising was near its American cultural peak in the late 1950s; fedora-style hats and sport jackets worn outdoors reflect mid-century leisure norms for men.

Research note

Identifiable adult male faces are visible in at least one frame; likeness rights for any living individuals cannot be confirmed from archival home-movie footage alone — legal review advised before broadcast use.

Research search match

Researchers may search for 1950s American men outdoors, Midwest lakeside leisure, mid-century home movie, cigarette smoking vintage footage, or male camaraderie 1950s.

Archive pairing path

Best paired with adjacent footage from the same reel; otherwise with 1950s Kansas or Midwest outdoor material; or thematically with mid-century men's leisure, fishing, or smoking scenes.
