About this footage
The person filming these 1958 Kansas reels made hand-lettered title cards, and one complains of "not a tree in miles" over flat, open prairie. Another announces crossing "the mighty Mississippi," and a third sends everyone out for lunch. Long stretches are filmed from the car: dirt roads, dry grass, rolling hills under a pale sky.
A small-town parade in Cheyenne County gets plenty of film. One float carries a miniature white church, women in aprons ride with a 4-H sign, marching bands in yellow and dark uniforms pass, and men in football jerseys sit in a horse-drawn carriage. A boy in a cowboy hat rides at a rodeo, and caged animals at a small zoo include a bear, a big cat and several deer. Other clips follow hunters with rifles and game birds in windy fields. In Saint Francis, kids play tag and look at their reflections in a river, and a girl poses beside a light green Cadillac.
