Nebraska USA-1955: Smoking Man Sitting On The Couch

Archive Intelligence

Archive brief fit

Suits 1950s American domestic life sequences in documentaries about postwar home culture, smoking history, or midcentury interior design.

Period detail

The black rotary telephone, brass ashtray, suspenders over a white dress shirt, and patterned lamp shade are consistent with mid-1950s American domestic interiors.

Home-movie behavior

The subject appears unguarded and relaxed, caught in an unrehearsed daily habit — a candid intimacy rarely achievable in posed photography of the era.

What appears in frame

Man in white dress shirt and dark suspenders, lit cigarette, black rotary telephone, brass ashtray, dark side table, stacked magazines beneath it, patterned lamp, and a warm curtain at the frame edge.

Film character

Mild color fading and visible grain lend a warm, slightly desaturated quality consistent with aged 8mm color reversal stock of the mid-1950s.

Edit role

Functions as a domestic cutaway or memory-beat insert for documentaries on postwar American life, tobacco history, or midcentury home interiors.

Historical context

Routine home smoking and the rotary telephone as a living-room fixture both reflect normalized domestic behaviors widely documented in 1950s American households.

Research note

An adult male face is clearly identifiable across multiple frames; producers should verify identification status and assess editorial-use requirements before licensing. Private interior is also noted.
