Idaho USA-1955: Young Man Ice Skating on Frozen Pond

Archive Intelligence

Archive brief fit

This clip suits documentary or educational productions needing authentic mid-1950s American recreational winter footage, specifically ice skating on a natural outdoor pond in the rural inland West.

Period detail

Casual civilian clothing (light sweater, dark jeans, white ice skates) and a dark-toned car visible in one frame are consistent with mid-1950s American style; the warm 8mm palette and grain support the stated 1955 date.

Home-movie behavior

A family member films an informal skating outing; the skater's self-conscious posturing and the bystanders' relaxed stance suggest amateur recording of a leisure afternoon rather than any staged performance.

What appears in frame

Frozen outdoor pond surface, young man in white sweater and dark jeans on ice skates, a second figure in a white shirt at the ice edge, bare winter grass, snow patches along the bank, and a dark period car parked on the bank.

Film character

Warm amber-shifted color, moderate grain structure, slight edge vignetting, and intermittent motion blur in the skating sequences are characteristic of 8mm reversal film from the mid-1950s.

Edit role

Works as a cutaway or memory-beat insert in 1950s Americana sequences; the full-figure skating shots can open or close a winter leisure montage, with the two-shot at the pond edge serving as a scene-setter.

Historical context

Recreational pond skating was a common rural winter pastime in 1950s Idaho before widespread indoor rink access; the informal dress and bystander presence reflect the community character of such outings.
