Chelan Washington USA-1939: Happy Men At A Social Gathering With Alcohol And Cigarettes

Archive Intelligence

Archive brief fit

Suits documentary producers needing authentic late-1930s American male social life footage — a candid indoor gathering with period dress, eating, and apparent smoking.

Period detail

Dark shirts, what appear to be suspenders in frame 0, and a cigarette visible in frame 2 are consistent with late-1930s working-class American dress.

Home-movie behavior

The poorly lit, handheld framing — subjects caught mid-motion and unposed — captures the unguarded spontaneity of a private gathering rather than any staged event.

What appears in frame

Two men smiling indoors, a plate of food, an apparent cigarette, a bright lamp flare causing overexposure, dark walls, a possible bottle at frame edge, and heavy film grain.

Film character

Extreme grain, heavy underexposure, and a single-source light flare blooming in frame 3 give this 8mm footage the raw, intimate texture of original late-1930s home-movie stock.

Edit role

Works as a memory insert or social-atmosphere cutaway in a Depression-era or pre-WWII documentary, or as a period texture cut within a personal-history narrative.

Historical context

The candid framing and informal dress suggest a private domestic or community gathering in small-town Washington; the cameraman appears to have been a participant rather than an observer.

Research note

Adult male faces are identifiable in frames 2 and 3; individual likeness status cannot be confirmed, and copyright ownership of the original film reel should be independently verified.
