Shot on 8mm film in 1939, this vintage home movie captures a group of passengers standing on a ship's deck in San Francisco, California. Men in suits and hats and women in period dresses and hats lean on the railing, some waving or looking out over the water. The grainy black-and-white footage, with visible film scratches and soft focus, evokes a sense of anticipation and nostalgia for a bygone era of ocean travel. The scene suggests a farewell or the beginning of a voyage, with the passengers appearing engaged in the moment.
