Female Polar Bear Fidget Moving In Zoo Enclosure — Clip Details

A vintage 8mm home movie from 1972 captures a female polar bear named Fidget in her zoo enclosure. The bear rests on stone platforms and walks through her habitat, with a green sign identifying her. The footage shows the bear's natural movements in a man-made environment, with visible film grain and color shifts typical of Super 8 film. The scene evokes a nostalgic look at zoo life in the early 1970s, with the bear's white fur contrasting against the gray rock structure.

Archive Intelligence

Archive brief fit: Useful for 1970s editorial or documentary requests needing visitor-shot zoo footage of a polar bear in a Chicago enclosure.
Period detail: The green identification sign, artificial rockwork and 8mm color handling may show early 1970s zoo exhibit presentation.
Home-movie behavior: The clip has the feel of a visitor filming a named animal through a brief, observational home-movie moment rather than a staged wildlife setup.
What appears in frame: Visible elements include a white polar bear, green identification sign, artificial stone ledges, concrete floor, shadowed enclosure gaps and film-frame borders.
Film character: The footage shows soft 8mm grain, slight color shift, uneven exposure and contact-print framing that add physical-film texture.
Edit role: An editor could use it as a short cutaway, memory beat or transitional insert for zoo visits, captive wildlife or 1970s public leisure.
Historical context: The footage documents a named polar bear in a man-made zoo habitat, offering visual context for how large animals were presented to visitors in this period.
Research note: No people are visible, but the identifying zoo sign and named animal should be reviewed for copyright, location and institutional-use considerations.
Research search match: Matches searches for 1972 Chicago zoo polar bear 8mm footage, vintage home movie zoo enclosure and named polar bear Fidget sign.
Archive pairing path: Pair first with adjacent shots from the same reel, then other Chicago 1972 zoo material, then broader vintage zoo or captive wildlife footage.
