A Great Day To Learn To Swim With Dad In The Pool — Clip Details

Shot on 8mm film in 1949, this vintage home movie captures a sunny day at a swimming pool in Santa Cruz, California. A man, likely a father, watches as a young child in a white swim cap floats on a black inner tube, learning to swim. The scene unfolds with natural, unscripted charm, showcasing classic mid-century poolside life with wooden lounge chairs and green grass visible beyond the pool's edge. The footage features authentic film grain, slight color fading, and a nostalgic, candid quality.

Archive Intelligence

Archive brief fit: 1940s Santa Cruz home-movie pool footage suited to documentary uses around family recreation, swimming lessons, summer leisure, and mid-century childhood memory.
Period detail: The scene may show late-1940s poolside leisure through the white swim cap, black inner tube, simple pool fencing, lawn, and wooden lounge chairs.
Home-movie behavior: The value is in the unstaged interaction as an adult watches a young swimmer practice with an inner tube in a sunny outdoor pool.
What appears in frame: Visible elements include the pool water, adult swimmer, young swimmer in a white cap, black inner tube, pool edge, fence, lawn, and lounge chairs.
Film character: The 8mm image has soft focus, visible grain, muted color, slight fading, and contact-sheet framing that retain the texture of original home-movie film.
Edit role: An editor could use this as a brief memory beat, family-summer cutaway, swimming lesson insert, or transition within a broader mid-century leisure sequence.
Historical context: The clip offers a candid view of postwar-era family recreation without establishing a public landmark or specific pool facility from the visible frames alone.
Research note: People and faces are visible, including a young swimmer, so likeness review may be needed in addition to separate copyright and location-use checks.
Research search match: Useful search matches include 1949 8mm Santa Cruz swimming pool, father child swim lesson home movie, and 1940s California summer pool footage.
Archive pairing path: Pair first with same-reel family footage, then with Santa Cruz or 1949 California material, then with broader themes of swimming lessons and summer recreation.
