Illinois USA-1962: Four Generations Of Family In Backyard

Archive Intelligence

Archive brief fit

Fills requests for early-1960s American family life, multi-generational portraiture, or Midwestern backyard social scenes in documentary or editorial productions.

Period detail

Women's patterned house dresses and set hairstyles are consistent with early-1960s American fashion; a painted garden bench and small dog anchor the domestic backyard setting.

Home-movie behavior

The group arranges itself for the camera operator — likely a family member — producing a candid-posed quality that staged photography rarely captures.

What appears in frame

Four women spanning multiple generations, a small brown dog, a painted garden bench, leafy shade trees, a manicured lawn, and mid-century patterned and floral dresses.

Film character

Warm color saturation, mild grain, and slight edge softness typical of 8mm reversal stock give the footage an intimate, time-capsule quality throughout.

Edit role

Works as a memory-beat insert or chapter-opening cutaway in documentary segments on American family life, postwar domesticity, or generational continuity.

Historical context

The backyard group portrait and multi-generational gathering reflect a common ritual of postwar American middle-class family documentation in the early 1960s.

Identifiable adult faces are visible throughout; standard likeness review is required before commercial use; no minors, logos, or recognizable landmarks are visible.
