Archive Intelligence

Archive brief fit

Serves documentary requests covering mid-century American leisure, summer recreation, or Midwest family life set in the early 1960s.

Period detail

8mm color stock and warm-season recreational setting are consistent with early-1960s home movie production; no anachronistic elements are visible.

Home-movie behavior

A backyard filmmaker records friends or family swimming toward a dock — unstaged, spontaneous leisure that professional crews rarely captured.

What appears in frame

Square wooden floating dock, two swimmers in open lake water, calm rippled surface, dense deciduous treeline, distant shoreline structures, light poles, pale blue sky, 8mm vignette border.

Film character

Characteristic 8mm blue-gray color shift, moderate grain, slight motion blur on the moving swimmers, and dark vignette borders give the footage a textured period authenticity.

Edit role

Functions as a summertime memory beat or cutaway insert in sequences about postwar American recreation, Midwest family life, or an era-driven documentary chapter.

Historical context

Floating swim docks were a common fixture of Midwest lake parks and private lake communities in the postwar decades, reflecting typical mid-century leisure culture.

Research note

Swimmers are visible at mid-distance; faces are not individually identifiable, but standard editorial clearance review for archival footage with incidental persons is advised.
