Illinois USA-1962: Woman on Dock with Boats at Lake

Archive Intelligence

Archive brief fit

Serves documentary segments on postwar Midwestern leisure culture, recreational boating, or 1960s American summer lifestyle — useful as an establishing or insert shot.

Period detail

White motorboat hull lines and canvas-covered boats on a tire-bumpered dock may indicate early-1960s recreational marina practice; woman's floral dress silhouette is consistent with early 1960s style.

Home-movie behavior

The woman walks the full length of the dock toward the camera, suggesting a family member filmed a casual lakeside arrival or send-off rather than a posed portrait.

What appears in frame

Wooden dock with rubber tire bumpers, white motorboat, canvas-covered boats, calm lake water, tree-lined far shore, partly cloudy summer sky, and a woman in a short-sleeved floral dress.

Film character

Vivid 8mm color shifts lake and sky toward saturated cyan-blue, with visible fine grain throughout that anchors the footage in mid-century amateur filmmaking.

Edit role

Functions as a wide establishing shot of the dock environment or a memory-beat cut-in to the woman's face; her walk toward camera provides natural movement for a transition insert.

Historical context

Postwar prosperity drove recreational boating across Midwest lake communities; tire bumpers and canvas boat covers reflect typical mid-century small-boat marina practice of the era.

Research note

One adult woman's face is clearly identifiable in the final frame; no visible brand markings detected on vessels; copyright rests with the original filmmaker — verify all rights before editorial use.
