Catskill New York-1957: People Attending A Fair Where A Band Plays

Archive Intelligence

Archive brief fit

Serves documentary and educational productions needing authentic 1950s small-town American community fair footage with a live band float and period crowd atmosphere.

Period detail

Men in suits and fedora-style hats, women in 1950s day dress, and a decoratively painted float with bass drum suggest mid-century American fair, consistent with the 1957 dating.

Home-movie behavior

An amateur cameraperson in the crowd captures the band float from close range then pans to the fairground midway, giving an unplanned, ground-level view of the event.

What appears in frame

Decorated parade float with large bass drum, gold scroll ornament, red fair buildings, American flags, crowd of adults in 1950s attire, black fedora hat, trees, overcast sky.

Film character

8mm color stock shows mild color bleaching and grain typical of 1950s amateur film, with slight frame softness and tonal shifts that reinforce the archival character.

Edit role

Works as a period-establishing insert or crowd cutaway in a documentary on mid-century American small-town life, or as a nostalgic memory beat in a narrated archive film.

Historical context

County and state fairs were central community social events in 1950s upstate New York; the decorated band float and gathered crowd reflect civic pride and communal celebration of the era.

Research note

Multiple identifiable adult faces are visible in crowd shots; music audible on source material may carry separate copyright; standard likeness review required before broadcast use.
