Hicksville New York-1956: Footage Of A Older Gentleman And His Family Exchanging Gifts

Archive Intelligence

Archive brief fit

Suits documentary editors or commercial producers needing authentic mid-1950s suburban domestic holiday footage — a real gift-exchange moment on 8mm from a named Long Island location.

Period detail

The man's suspenders and open-collar shirt, the woman's orange-patterned scarf and pinned updo, and the warm 8mm color palette are consistent with mid-1950s domestic styling.

Home-movie behavior

The subjects are absorbed in the gift exchange rather than performing for the camera, giving the clip the unstaged intimacy characteristic of a family member quietly documenting the moment.

What appears in frame

Older man in white shirt with dark suspenders, colorful wrapped gift box, partial blue-and-yellow gift box, woman in dark navy sweater, orange-patterned scarf, drop earring, table lamp, and dark-paneled interior background.

Film character

Visible 8mm grain, warm color shift, shallow depth of field, and uneven ambient exposure give the footage its characteristic mid-century home-movie texture — an archival quality, not a flaw.

Edit role

Functions as a memory beat or insert cut within a 1950s American domestic sequence, and as an emotional anchor in a documentary about postwar suburban family life or holiday traditions.

Historical context

Hicksville, New York was a rapidly growing postwar Long Island suburb; this footage may reflect the domestic interior culture and holiday customs of its mid-century middle-class residents.

Research note
