Albany New York-1955: Vintage 8mm Home Movie of a Couple and Young Man on a Lawn

Archive Intelligence

Archive brief fit

Fits documentary and educational requests for mid-1950s American suburban life, family social occasions, and period fashion in the northeastern United States.

Period detail

Woman's dark coat, white gloves, and box purse alongside men's fedoras and suit coats align with mid-1950s fashion; bare deciduous trees suggest early spring; partial automobiles in background may show late-1940s to mid-1950s American cars.

Home-movie behavior

The woman waves directly at the camera before the group gathers in close animated interaction — the candid, slightly self-conscious behavior typical of filmed family occasions.

What appears in frame

Man in dark suit and wide-brim hat, woman in navy coat with light box purse and gloves, younger man in light gray jacket, grassy suburban lawn, bare deciduous trees, stone garden border, partial automobiles, utility pole.

Film character

Kodachrome-era color rendering with characteristic warm saturation, visible 8mm grain, slight soft focus on subjects, and shallow depth of field typical of consumer handheld shooting.

Edit role

Works as a period-establishing character insert or memory-beat cutaway in documentaries about postwar American suburban life, 1950s family culture, or northeastern US social history.

Historical context

Formal dress — fedoras, coat-and-gloves, box purse — on a manicured suburban lawn suggests this may document a family visit or occasion; the setting and automobiles reflect mid-century American prosperity.

Research note

Identifiable adult faces are visible throughout; likeness rights for private individuals in home movies must be independently assessed for commercial use; no model releases are documented.
