Albany New York-1955: Man Shoveling Snow in Suburban Yard

Archive Intelligence

Archive brief fit

Serves mid-century Americana documentary requests — winter weather, domestic life, 1950s suburban USA; suitable as an editorial cutaway or nostalgic memory beat.

Period detail

Postwar ranch-style house exterior, vintage winter coat and hat, and timber utility poles are consistent with mid-1950s suburban northeastern USA.

Home-movie behavior

A family member filmed from a distance as the man worked, capturing the effortful reality of a heavy snowfall rather than staging a posed shot.

What appears in frame

Man in dark coat and winter hat, snow shovel, deep snow cover, white ranch-style house, dark roof, bare deciduous trees, utility pole, open suburban yard.

Film character

Lavender-shifted color palette and visible film grain give the footage the characteristic look of aged mid-century 8mm stock, with soft edges that read as authentic period texture.

Edit role

Works as a short cutaway or insert in winter-weather sequences, domestic-life montages, or mid-century Americana documentary segments.

Historical context

Snow clearing was a shared mid-century suburban ritual; the postwar ranch house and utility pole layout reflect rapid residential expansion of northeastern US cities in the 1950s.
