Nebraska USA-1957: Family Birthday Party

Archive Intelligence

Archive brief fit

This clip suits documentary or educational productions needing candid glimpses of 1950s American domestic life, particularly mid-decade Midwestern family gatherings.

Period detail

Men's plaid shirts, white t-shirts, and suspenders, along with an older man's horn-rimmed glasses, are consistent with mid-1950s rural American casual dress.

Home-movie behavior

The camera moves casually among family members in an unposed setting, capturing the natural social rhythms of men interacting at a domestic gathering.

What appears in frame

Frames show men in plaid shirt and white t-shirts, a man in a wheelchair, an older man with glasses and suspenders, plain interior walls, a dark cylindrical object, and canned goods in the background.

Film character

The 8mm footage exhibits color-shifted tones, visible grain, and soft focus characteristic of consumer film stock from the late 1950s, lending period-authentic intimacy.

Edit role

Works as a cutaway or memory-beat insert in documentary segments on mid-century American domestic life, disability history, or intergenerational family bonds.

Historical context

The wheelchair-using subject and multi-generational male gathering offer a candid look at domestic social life of the era; home-movie footage of disability in private settings is relatively rare in archival collections.

Research note

Identifiable adult faces are clearly visible throughout; the wheelchair-using individual may warrant sensitivity review; no assumption of clearance for commercial release should be made without a rights assessment.
