About this footage
A hand-painted title card, "Our Trip to Mich. Oct. 1960," opens this collection, and much of what follows is that autumn road trip. The family films from the car through turning woods, crosses long bridges, rides a ferry with their tail-finned car on the deck, and watches long cargo ships pass on the lakes.
Signs mark the stops. A wooden board describes the Kitchi Ti Kipi spring, and an official Mackinac Island information sign hangs on a clapboard wall. Nearby, horse teams pull a red carriage down a street, people ride bicycles, a big white hotel flies American flags along its colonnade, and a rock arch rises out of the trees. There are waterfalls, high views over forested river valleys, and stone breakwaters at the harbors.
The Brighton reels stay closer to home: boys splash beside a wooden dock, two people paddle a red canoe, relatives share meals in a wood-paneled room, and a boy poses in a marching band uniform with a saxophone. Good for stories on Great Lakes travel or family life in 1960.
