About this footage
Farm work fills a large share of this reel. Men and women bend over flooded rice paddies setting out seedlings, terraced fields hold standing water, and farmers harvest wheat by hand or push two-wheeled carts stacked high with hay along dirt paths. Several shots look across fields toward wooden farmhouses with dark tiled or thatched roofs.
The camera also spends time on the water. Wooden boats and barges crowd canals and a river, people live and work on board, and one man poles a barge out from under a steel truss bridge. Laundry hangs on lines between closely built houses near the shore.
In town, the footage turns to streets and work: women shopping at outdoor produce markets, a shoe-shine stand on a busy sidewalk, men loading sacks onto a freight train, crews on construction sites, and a bus outside a large brick station building. There are crowds at an outdoor fair as well. The clips are useful for productions about farming, river and canal life, or daily work in Japan in 1953.
