1973 New Mexico

It's quite fascinating how the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta, a spectacle that now draws hundreds of thousands of visitors from around the world, had such humble beginnings. Back in 1973, the first festival was just a modest event that brought together 13 hot air balloons and around 10,000 spectators at the Coronado Center shopping mall parking lot. It was a joint endeavor between Sid Cutter, an ardent balloonist, and Tom Rutherford, a manager at KOB Radio, to mark the radio station's golden jubilee in an original way.
